An event celebrating the growing activity of Bouldering will be held at Curt Gowdy State Park, October 5-6. Activities for the event will be coordinated at Hynds Lodge.
Sponsored by Organic Bouldering Mats, the Curt Gowdy State Park Bouldering Festival begins with volunteer trail maintenance and prizes from 9 a.m. until noon. The event continues with a Bouldering competition from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m., competition awards are presented followed by a raffle and entertainment into the evening hours.
During the event free camping is available at Camp Jack and refreshments will be available at Hynds Lodge.
Bouldering and climbing in the park is scheduled all day on October 6.
Bouldering is a style of rock climbing without a rope and usually limited to short climbs ranging from a few feet from the ground to around 15 feet. Instead of using ropes for protection boulderers rely on crash pads and spotters to help protect them if they fall.
Several areas within Curt Gowdy State Park have been identified as good bouldering spots, many of which are protected from the wind and relatively free of snow during the winter months.
