The first of a series of clinics and hiking events sponsored by Sierra Trading Post and held at Curt Gowdy State Park will be held April 7. Participants will be granted free admission to the park.
The first event, “Day Hiking Basics clinic and Hike,” will begin at 11 a.m. at the Volin Trailhead.
The hike will begin with a brief clinic about day hiking and some of the essential gear that everyone should bring along, as well as precautions that people should take into account.
Some of the history of Curt Gowdy State Park and guidelines governing responsible use of the trails within the park will also be covered. After the clinic, a hike lasting approximately two hours on moderate terrain will be held.
Other events are and outdoor photographer/early wildfire hike (May 5), introduction to fishing (June 2), birding/late wildfire hike (July 7), compass and GPS navigation hike (Aug. 4), introduction to “Tread Lightly” (Sept. 1), backpacking basics (Oct.6), wildlife/winter hiking basics (Nov.3), and Snowshoeing basics (Dec.1).
Participants in these clinics and hikes should come prepared with the basic supplies that they will need for the duration of the event, such as weather appropriate clothing, sun protection, ample water and any snacks they may want along the way.
Certain devices, like binoculars or a camera, are recommended for some of the hikes in order to get the most out of the experience, but the hikes can be enjoyed without those as well.
The majority of the hikes, unless otherwise stated, will be over moderate terrain, for durations of two to three hours. In general, the clinics will be held prior to the hike, and will last 30-45 minutes. All events will be held at Curt Gowdy State Park on the first Saturday of the month. Meeting locations will be publicized prior to each event.
Participants in the clinics and hikes will be granted free admission to the park for the duration of the event.
