With your personal expertise and skill sets, you can enhance and enrich our programs. Volunteers contribute to a variety of positions that are necessary to maintain and preserve Wyoming's cultural and natural resources, and allow SPHST to be operable and meet our mission. Group volunteer opportunities and special projects are handled by the Volunteer Coordinator. Contact Stacy Sprengeler directly for information, or for service projects for your organization.
The Volunteer Coordinator in Cheyenne will review the application and send it to the park or historic site of interest to you.
The site Superintendent or their designee will contact you for an interview.
Fill out a Volunteer Agreement (once per year), to be on file prior to beginning service. Minors must have parent or guardian signature.
If your volunteer position involves driving a state vehicle, you must provide a valid Driver’s License and insurance information, and pass the State of Wyoming Defensive Driving Test.
Camp Hosts
SPHST has a vibrant camp host program. From May 15-September 15, camp hosts reside at a state park or historic site, receiving a free camping spot in exchange for their volunteer service. Positions are filled on a first-come, first served basis, depending on availability at our sites. See the Camp Host tab for more information.
Trails play a large part in our system’s recreational opportunities. Trail building and maintenance occurs throughout the summer months, but four Trail Volunteer Days are offered each year. For more information, contact Paul Gritten, the Non-motorized Trails Coordinator.
Volunteers enhance and enrich our program with their knowledge and skill sets. Volunteers are an integral part of our team and perform functions that allow SPHST to be operable and meet our mission.
A camp host is a person or couple who volunteers their time at a state park or historic site for two months or more in exchange for a camping spot during their volunteer service. The difference between a site host and a camp host is that a camp host is responsible for campgrounds or designated areas, whereas a site host holds a position where there are no campgrounds or overnight camping.
The Volunteer Coordinator in Cheyenne will contact you to further discuss your interests, skill sets, availability, and position openings.
Applications will be sent to Park/Historic Site Superintendent or their volunteer coordinator on-site. They will review all applications and will conduct an interview with candidate(s) whose skill sets and interests best meet site needs. Post interview, the Volunteer Coordinator in Cheyenne will be notified of their selection.
Upon being notified of a conditional offer for a position, the Volunteer Coordinator will provide the individual or couple with a link to the secure background screening website. Placement is contingent on successfully passing the background check. Results take up to one week to be returned. When the screening is completed, the Volunteer Coordinator reviews the report and a placement decision is made. After which, the applicant(s), state park or historic site is notified.

After notification of a successful background check screening, the Superintendent or volunteer coordinator on-site will contact applicant(s) to extend the formal offer to camp host. Arrangements for arriving on-site will be made between site staff and camp host(s).
Camp host positions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Returning camp hosts are given first choice on location if a position is available. Inquiries and applications for camp host positions are answered and received throughout the year. However, information on the number of positions available for the coming season is not accessible until October. Most placements are made in October-November. It can take up to a month to complete the placement process, depending on response time from applicant(s), park staff, and background check clearance. Completion of an application does not guarantee placement within the Division’s Volunteer Program.
Terms of Service
We ask our hosts for a minimum of a two month commitment. Our season is from May 15th – September 15th. Some sites have availability in April and into October, but that is not our system standard. Hosts typically work 3-4 days per week, to include weekends and holidays, as those are our busiest times. In general, our hosts serve 20 hours per week, per person, depending on location. There are a few sites in our system that request 24 hours per week, per person.

Governor Matt Mead announced a new initiative to promote the outdoor recreational industry in Wyoming this year. The Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources will work with private and public stakeholders to develop recommendations to grow Wyoming’s strong outdoor recreation economy.
“Wyoming has world-class opportunities for hunting, fishing, photography and other outdoor recreation. Many of our fondest memories are with friends and family in the outdoors,” said Governor Mead. “The Task Force will build on the considerable work already done and offer ideas to improve outdoor recreation opportunities, marketing and business recruitment.”
Wyoming has seen its outdoor business sector grow in recent years. A 2012 Outdoor Industry Association report found that outdoor recreation in Wyoming generates approximately $4.5 billion annually in consumer spending, $1.4 billion in wages and salaries, $300 million in state and local tax revenue and creates 50,000 jobs. The Governor has championed Wyoming’s outdoor economy since taking office in 2011.
The Outdoor Recreation Task Force will meet 5 times between December 2016 and May 2017 to develop policy recommendations for Governor Matt Mead’s consideration. Recommendations may include principles to guide and identify the benefits of outdoor recreation, outline efforts to expand business opportunities and improve recreation infrastructure in the state's second largest industry.
