Despite bitter cold temperatures through much of the state, nearly 700 people participated in this year’s Wyoming State Parks sponsored First Day Hikes event.

Sixteen New Year’s Day guided hikes and walks were held at state park and historic site venues statewide in conjunction with similar hikes held in all 50 states; a part of the America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative.

The seventh consecutive year Wyoming has offered free First Day Hikes, this year’s numbers saw 200 more participants this year than last, resulting in nearly 1,700 combined miles hiked.

Sites participating in this year’s event and the number of hikers were: Bear River, 25; Boysen, 21; Buffalo Bill, 20; Curt Gowdy, 240; Edness Kimball Wilkins, 22; Fort Bridger, 150; Fort Fetterman, 6; Fort Phil Kearny, 17; Fort Steele, 19; Guernsey, 30; Hot Springs, 12; Keyhole, 15; Medicine Lodge, 25; Sinks Canyon, 40; South Pass City, 58; and Trail End, 22.
