History:

Ten years prior to the epic Battle of the Little Bighorn (“Custer’s Last Stand”), Fort Phil Kearny soldiers encountered a surprise attack by Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Lakota warriors that devastated the fort and left survivors to bury 81 men in the brutally frigid temperatures of 1866. This, the Battle of the Hundred in the Hand (Fetterman Battle), was the greatest loss of life suffered by the U.S. Army at the hands of a Native force up to that date, and until the Battle of the Little Bighorn, 10 years later.
