About Our Site - Fort Fred Steele

This frontier Army post, which served as a hub for both the military and Wyoming’s lumber and livestock industries, is located just off I-80 at Exit 228. This frontier Army post has a fascinating history interlacing transportation with the military and the growth of the lumber and livestock industries in Wyoming. Fort Fred Steele State Historic Site is administered by the Division of State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails, Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources.

A View into the Past

Today many of the foundations are visible but very few structures are intact. Fort Steele State Historic Site offers an excellent opportunity for the preservation and interpretation of Wyoming’s diverse cultural heritage. Although the number of structures has declined over the years what remains standing is living testimony to the flourishing and subsequent passing of several frontiers.

Ft. Phil Kearny State Historic Site Hosts Annual Kids' Pheasant Hunt

Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site hosts the Fifth Annual Kids’ Pheasant Hunt on November 25-26.

The event is an opportunity for families and friends wanting to hunt with young people ages 17 and younger to harvest pheasants, practice safe hunting skills, and enjoy the Piney Creek landscape at the historic Fort grounds.

Hunters will launch at two times during each day: 8:30 a.m. in the morning and 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. All parties must include a minimum of one youth hunter and a maximum of one adult hunter. Additional adults are encouraged to accompany the party but will not be allowed to hunt.

Hunters wishing to participate in the Kids’ Hunt are encouraged to call Fort Phil Kearny Interpretive Center at 307-684-7629 to sign up with a staff person or leave a message with desired hunt time and day.  Hunters may also call or text 307-620-0331 to register. Birds are released before the event and space is limited.

The event is an opportunity for adults to demonstrate good hunting practices while making the youth experience a priority.  “Wyoming Game and Fish has been an excellent partner in providing this opportunity for hunters,” says Misty Stoll, Fort Phil Kearny Superintendent.  “We love to keep this weekend open for kids to have the time and space they need to really get after a bird!”

Those wishing to register on the day of the hunt should arrive at 8 a.m. to register for the morning hunt and 12:30 p.m. for the afternoon hunt.  All hunters must have valid licenses and conservation stamps.

Cost is $2 per adult for Wyoming Residents and $4 per adult for Out-Of-State Hunters.  Hunters ages 17 and under will hunt free.  The Annual Fort Phil Kearny Kids’ Hunt is made possible by a partnership with Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Fort Phil Kearny State History Site is located at 528 Wagon Box Rd in Banner, Wyoming.  For more information (307) 684-7629.
